Greetings Valley Readers,

ONCE AGAIN IT’S ON!! Since my last entry, more Californians have been burned out of their homes, CNN attempted to scratch the surface in opening up dialogue about what it means to be black in America, Obama is still getting "hated" on for appering prematurely presidential, foreign investors and corporations continue to acquire American property and businesses, real estate market aint changed a bit, and American working class are feeling the punch of high gas prices and unemployment. A mouthful I know, but it don’t stop there! Let’s add to the mix, a NEW war between Russia and Georgia that has western influence written all over it! All of this is enough to evoke the spirit of Marvin Gaye and, "MAKE ME WANNA HOOOOLLA!!!"

Despite the incessant drama that continues to redefine and challenge what it means to live in America, there is one event that reminds us of our capacity to unite with all world nations. One event that shows us how the decisions of a few, don’t necessarily reflect the attitudes and sentiments of the masses. One event that brings us all together in the spirit of fair play, achievment and competition. One event where nations from every corner of the world join in the name of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and honor. So many lessons to learn. So many opportunities to be inspired. So many examples of teamwork on display. So many exibitions of individual committment and dedication. Diplomacy at its best wrapped in an entertaining, and uplifting sports package!

Thank God for the Olympics! This is the season where athletes make stronger political statements in competition than the leaders in their own countries could ever make in a press conference. Where we get to witness Russian and Georgian athletes hold each other up as winners, offering the world a stark contrast to the bloodletting and destruction in their respective homelands.

The Olympics remind us that despite all the negative events happening at home, the human spirit of healthy, honest, competition is powerful enough to incite in us a desire to come together and show our love and appreciation for the world’s most talented ambassadors.

Thas’ Peace,

Jennifer Burns
