Encouraging Young People to Vote

As I watched the recent Democratic Convention, the special feature conducted by CNN on Obamba’s life revealed a serious message. It revealed that you can achieve success, personal vision and commitment to change if you have belief and action in your commitment to social change. As a culture, Black Americans have made tremendous strides in the area of athletics, music, television and entertainment. The media has a sadistic way of presenting our culture. They (the media) don’t provide us with images of the next group of young Black Americans who are becoming part of Obama’s movement for social change.

During the convention, I believe that it is important for young Black Americans to see, hear and discuss our next leaders of tomorrow. We ( Black Americans) can hear the latest video on BET, hear about our latest sports stars, but we need to develop, establish and present our new leadership in Black America to our youth. The reality is that fewer Black American males are attending college and receiving post-graduate degrees. On prime time television, we don’t see young Black Americans in feature stories about their grass-roots efforts in their communities; we are marketing young Black talented students to return to their communities to recruit and register Black American voters between the ages of 18-30. We don’t discuss the number of Black Americans who are not registered as voters and what impact that it will have on the election in November 2008.

As we move closer to the Election 2008, let’s challenge our local media, newspaper and internet outlets to present feature stories on Young Black Americans who need to be marketed as the face of Americ in the future. When we can " KEEP IT REAL" and bring about social and political change.
